June the 25th: Torture Accountability Action Day

FoltergeräteImage via Wikipedia

On Torture Accountability Action Day, we highlight the terribly poor standards of torture in our society, and seek to improve accountability and responsibility on the part of torturers. Here are a few of the initiatives being launched this June the 25th:

  1. An industry-funded Consumer Complaints helpline is to be established, allowing victims of poor-quality torture to report their experiences.
  2. The Better Business Bureau will be launching a new website ("The Responsible Rack"), aimed at better educating the torture consumer and naming and shaming "cowboy" torturers.
  3. The setting-up of a new Union of Torturers, Interrogators and Toe-Cutters, offering health insurance and legal support to the torturing professional and guaranteeing minimum standards of workmanship.
  4. Waiting periods to be introduced on purchases of Iron Maidens, thumbscrews and rubber hose (when sold in lengths of less than two feet).
  5. A "Certificate in Basic Torture" will shortly be issued by major universities and training organisations, requiring that the recipient has attended a series of courses on fundamental torture-related skills (proposed topics: "Health and Safety in the Torture Chamber", "Know Your Gouging Implements", "Damp-Proofing Your Waterboard").

That's your Day for today.
