June the 21st: World Humanist Day

HumanismImage via Wikipedia

So, June the 21st is World Humanist Day. Not everybody likes to adopt a label for what they don't believe in, but Humanism as a movement has grown steadily in recent years, now boasting about three to five million adherents worldwide.

That would probably be ten million by now, if it wasn't for this logo:

The "Happy Human", created in 1965 by Denis Barrington (he actually won a competition with this thing) is probably the greatest thing standing between Humanist organisations and real worldwide recognition.

There are two major things wrong with the "Happy Human":

1. It doesn't look like a human.
2. It's clearly not happy. It's going "WOOO!" and pretending to be a ghost.

To fully illustrate point two, let's look at the logo in a slightly different context.

You see?

But Day of X isn't about mocking. It's not about putting down others' shortcomings. When we see something that's not right, what do we do? We step up and we goddamn fix it. And fortunately, it takes only a single addition to make this logo the stirring symbol of positivity it should be. Which is good because I'm really hungover.

Three examples:

1. Jetpack

2. Pie

3. Party hat

International Humanist and Ethical Union, you are very welcome.

And that's your Day for today.

I'm going back to bed.
