June the 1st: International Children's Day

While there isn't a real international consensus on when to celebrate Children's Day, the majority of nations celebrate it on June the 1st.

Children's Day is mostly used to promote issues of child welfare, but I feel they've overlooked an equally important way to use the day. As adults, many of us have forgotten what it's like to be a kid, and Children's Day is the ideal Day to regress to your childhood. It's therapeutic, educational and fun! Here are 10 suggestions to get you started:

  1. Get yourself a really good stick, and poke things with it. Bonus points if you find something dead to poke.
  2. Buy yourself something you always wanted when you were a kid; A catapult, a remote control car, maybe a dog!
  3. See how long you can go "La la la la la la la la la la la la la" before somebody yells at you to stop.
  4. Take something apart to see how it works.
  5. Matches.
  6. Look at things from underneath. See what's on the bottom of your table, your bed, your car. Advanced version: Lie on your back and explore your house or office by pushing yourself around with your feet.
  7. Eat your food in alphabetical order, or by colour, or pretend you're a giant eating things (don't forget to do the screams of tiny eaten people).
  8. If you're cooking, mix together everything in the kitchen that looks interesting. When you get bored, put it in the oven and go do something else.
  9. When you sit down, reject the conventional sitting position. Drape your legs over the side of the chair, tuck your feet under you (then slowly pitch forward until your hands are on the floor), stick your legs straight out in front of you and wave your toes around while grinning at people, or best of all sit upside-down with your head on the floor (at least until your vision starts blurring)
  10. Eat ice-cream until you throw up.

You may be challenged on some of these behaviours by your family, friends, co-workers or in extreme cases the police. Which is why you'll need to print out and carry your Temporary Kid Licence Card.
